DURHAM, April 2, 2002) - Dive for sharks off Bora Bora, hike a volcano in Guadeloupe or relax with a massage in a traditional Turkish hammam on Globe Trekker, a new series beginning Sunday, April 7 at 8 p.m. on New Hampshire Public Television. Globe Trekker takes viewers on a dynamic and stylish tour of unforgettable world destinations with 13 episodes shot from every part of the globe, including Kenya, Mexico, Rome, Tokyo and New England.A continuation of the award-winning Lonely Planet travel series, Globe Trekker has something for "extreme" travelers and armchair viewers alike with its stunning photography, rhythmic indigenous music and unique spirit of adventure. In keeping with their aim of "living as the locals do," the travelers explore the sights and activities that include a mix of traditional and popular culture, landmark attractions and off-the-beaten-path adventures. Episodes document the journeys of travel guides as they sample local delicacies, stay in traditional lodgings - huts, desert tents and local guesthouses - and interact with residents in ways that bring these exotic destinations to life.Selected Globe Trekker programs in the series include:"Istanbul City Guide" - Estelle Bingham explores this exotic city, visiting the famous Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace and the ancient church, Aya Sofia. She shops the Grand Bazaar, gets a massage in a traditional hammam and has a belly-dancing lesson. Her adventure continues with day trips to Gallipoli, the famous World War I battle site, and Edirne where she witnesses the famous oiled wrestling festival. She ends her visit watching the famous Sufi whirling dervishes."Tahiti and Samoa" - Ian Wright takes a trip to paradise, island hopping in the South Pacific where he helps judge the Mr. Tahiti contest and dives among sharks and manta rays off Bora Bora. He goes diving for black pearls in the Tuamotu islands, sees what inspired artist Paul Gauguin in Tahiti and visits the remote island of Tubuai, where the Mutiny on the Bounty crew stopped over. Ian ends his journey with a trek up Tahiti's Mount Aorai."South of France"- Christina Chang wines and dines her way through the South of France where she visits the ancient cave paintings and a wine spa in Bordeaux before canoeing along the beautiful Dordogne River. She heads south into the Basque region and over to Van Gogh's favorite town of Arles, also home to a great Roman coliseum. She has a whirlwind visit to Monaco, before ending her trip on the beaches of the Cote d'Azur."Indonesia: Java and Sumatra" - Megan McCormick explores two of the 11,000 islands in the Indonesian archipelago. She climbs the famous Krakatoa volcano and goes diving in the waters nearby. After visiting the Boroubudur Temple, Megan travels to Sumatra, learning the ancient art of batik.
